It was a beehive of activity for 300 inmates of the total population of 3000 at the Kamiti maximum prison who will now undertake a life transformation path after the birth of two programs within Kenya's most guarded correctional facility. The mind education training program at Kamiti maximum will have 200 students while 100 will undertake a theology course by Mahanaim Bible College Kamiti Maximum. The event was graced by Dr. Kim Ki-Sung, a mind Education Specialist from South Korea, and the Director of Reforms in prisons Ms. Wanini Kireri. 50 women inmates from Langata women prison who will also benefit from the same programs were in attendance.

The project is a partnership between International Youth Fellowship (IYF) and Kenya Prison Service (KPS) begun three months where a pilot project was conducted in 16 prison facilities 9 out of which are within the Nairobi region. Addressing the gathering several speakers praised the partnership that is geared towards mitigating recidivism and fostering reforms in prison facilities across the country. To begin with 300 inmates will benefit from the program that targets to train those who serving six months to 1 year of their final term in prison.

Dr. Kim Ki Sung’s now the Director of Mind Set Training Institute, shared his testimony of 17 years in jail which touched the inmates hearts and giving them a hope of how learning Mind Education can change one’s life. Dr. Kim who is a global renowned specialist in correctional facilities and discipline forces has indicated that he targets to use the first bunch of students to teach other inmates in other facilities in the country and beyond as teachers and role models.

Speaking during the same occasion Ms Wanini Kareri has requested that Officer in charge of correctional facilities country wide should begin the mind education program for the prison officers. She says that the prison officers require the mind education to foster the much awaited prison reforms among the officers.

The program will start with Kamiti maximum prison but is expected to roll out to all the 119 facilities across the country. The event was attended by top Kenya prison service officers, Regional commander Nairobi, Ms. Wairimu Thang’ate, Henry Kisingu Officer in charge Kamiti maximum Prison, Ms. Olivia O’bell, Lang’ata women prison among others. The objective of the program is to reduce the rate of recidivism in the country that currently stands at 47%. Graduates of the programs will become specialists and also ministers of the gospel ready to begin their own ministries upon release from prison.
