Spiritual Life of Nicodemus and of Samaritan Woman Part 1

Let’s open the book of John 3:13-18. Today I’d like to speak about the spiritual life of Nicodemus and of Samaritan woman. Everyone in chapter 3 right now is talking about Nicodemus who was a Pharisees and when you look at chapter 4 is talking about Samaritan woman. I would like to compare these two people's spiritual life. What is the difference between these two people? Why does one believe in that way while the other beliefs in the other way? When you look at chapter 3 it starts talking about Nicodemus who was a Pharisee John 3:1.

Everyone Nicodemus was not a lowly person in the community of the Jews. He was Pharisee, he was the one who knows the Bible, who understands and teaches the Bible to other people and he was the ruler of the Jews which means he had a position in the community of the Jews, he had a position, he knows the Bible, that’s why he came to Jesus believing that I know something about the Bible that’s why when you look in verse 2 everyone even at night he came searching for Jesus so that he may learn from Jesus.

However, though he had the heart of wanting to learn something from Jesus, he did not come with a prepared heart to learn something from Jesus. Why? Because he believed that he knew something about Jesus and he did know about Jesus. Nicodemus knew that Jesus came from God. Everyone does he know about Jesus? Yes. Unlike other Pharisees.

He knew about Jesus better than other people and he knows the signs and the works that He’s doing it did not come from Jesus himself but it comes from God. Right? Yes, when you look at Nicodemus outwardly it seems like he knows Jesus but one thing we know is that he doesn’t really know about Jesus but in the heart of Nicodemus he thought he knew Jesus.

I know about him I am the ruler of the Jews am a Pharisees who studies the bible who knows about the Bible in his heart he had the heart of trusting in himself thinking and believing that I know the Bible, I am alright, I’m ok, I’m fine, I’m better than other people.

Everyone in order for you to receive Jesus in your heart while you are having the heart of thinking and believing that I know Jesus with the heart of trusting in yourself. You cannot receive Jesus inside your heart. On the other hand, when you look at the Samaritan woman, this woman did not have anything from herself to trust in herself.

She was the one who had five different husbands and she was living with the sixth husband. She was so embarrassed there’s nothing she could boast of about herself, there’s nothing she could say like oh, I have many husbands, that’s not something for you to boast about right?

Everyone, she was a very embarrassed woman she was the woman who did not know anything about Jesus very well, she didn’t have anything to trust in herself, she only knew one thing about herself. I’m a dirty woman, I’m a lacking person, I’m a woman who had five husbands and had a failure with these five husbands and now am living with the sixth and am still having failure with this other one. Everyone, she was the one who knew about her true image.

Everyone who is able to meet accurately with Jesus in their hearts? It is not the smart people, it is not people who have position, it is not the ruler of the Jews, but most of the people have the heart of trusting in themselves like Nicodemus. Everyone if you have the heart of trusting in yourselves thinking that I’m the ruler of the Jews, I’m fine, I’m good, and then the word cannot come inside of us the way it is.

But when you look at the Samaritan woman, she did not have anything in herself to trust in. she knew herself accurately she realized her true image as a dirty and filthy person that’s why when you look at the position of the heart of this Samaritan woman her heart was prepared to receive the word of Jesus the way it is. Everyone why don’t you repeat after me, “Receiving the word the way it is.” What about Nicodemus?

He thought he knew something about the Bible, he thought he was educated about the Bible he thought he had big position among the Jews he had the heart of trusting and believing in himself that’s why for the spiritual life in the heart of Nicodemus he could not receive the heart of Jesus the way it is. Those people who are trusting in themselves they cannot receive the heart of Jesus the way it is.

That’s why when you look at John 3 right now Jesus is trying to preach the gospel to Nicodemus but because he cannot understand the heart of Jesus because the word of Jesus is nonsense because Jesus is speaking the word which he cannot understand we can see Nicodemus rejecting the word. Let’s take a look John 3:3. Jesus is trying to preach the gospel to Nicodemus who is a Pharisees who is a ruler of the Jew.

Hey, Nicodemus, you need to be born again so that you can receive salvation and enter into the kingdom of heaven. But to Nicodemus the word being born again he could not understand. What does it mean by being born again? Do you have to go back to your mother’s womb and be born again? Verse4. Right now is he receiving the word of Jesus? Is he listening to the word of Jesus?

He is not listening to the word of Jesus why? Because the term you got to be born again, how can you be born again? That is something he cannot understand. That word of Jesus does not match with his heart. That’s why he rejects it.
